The Preventers are a band from Cumbernauld, Scotland.
Think the 50s: gelled back quiffs, leather jackets… when Coca Cola was trendy with a logo that once resembled The Preventers’, and the American youth seemed to have walked off the set of Rebel without a Cause. That’s probably an exaggeration of what the 50s were actually like in the States, but those are the kinds of images conjured by the jaunty guitars that permeate two out of the three tracks on The Preventers’ EP – pure fun and exhilaration.
‘Free Livin’’ sounds off with a ringing school bell before entering a gallop of energetic strings and rebellious lyrics which enhance the free-spirited, feel good mood of the song. With an arrangement that screams the King of Rock’n’Roll-moves-to-Scotland, the rockabilly melody is a time portal to a rawer musical era…And one to get you dancing.
‘Remember Me’ is an angelic tune with dynamic tones putting the sonic development in a constant state of transformation. Beginning softly, with delicate vocals and transcendent, unearthly keys, The Preventers showcase a completely different dimension of their sound – a more serious, mature one. But the initially laid back atmosphere, with its easy bass, segues into a quicker tempo with fervent percussion, and a dramatic melodic buildup filled with an edgier melancholy. It goes back and forth, the song maintaining its volatility to the end, putting the listener in a state of turmoil and relaxation – an ode to the restless.
‘Cold Out Here’ has a funkier groove than the previous two, but resonates once again with Elvis’ suave nature – the chorus built upon half part elegance, half part youthful excitement. The melody sounding like a mix of jazz and blues, the lyrics are carefree and playful – a sentiment echoed again, by the bass. Clearly masters at bringing together a variety of genres to produce something that is as charismatic as it is organic, The Preventers have brought the roots of American rock’n’roll to Scotland. They create something pure and original. And I think their sound will be boundless in terms of how far it will go across the globe.
