Single Review: ‘The Beautiful Ones’ by Patches Run!

Patches Run

I’ve probably said this before… But I love gigs and being united with a crowd of people, with whom I can just sing my heart out. It’s spiritually uplifting, the way everyone there, no matter what their background is, has some sort of emotional common ground in the way they relate to that song. And I have to say, I’m weak for those big stadium songs – the anthems that bring out that communal joy – even lighter flames, and throwing arms up in the air… Few bands, I think, have been able to create that magic: Oasis, The Verve, older Coldplay…

So I was lucky enough to be found by L.A. based duo, Patches Run. Collin and Chris Livingston are master artists whose music seems to have that magic. Though their back catalogue is still young, they’ve definitely made an impression with their single…

‘The Beautiful Ones’ reminds me of Coldplay in their more genuine days – circa X & Y, I’d say. It has the same spacey quality present in the album, creating that high altitude atmospheric intensity. The song opens up with edgy grandeur complete with boisterous strings and a celebratory tone. The listening experience transcends that of a regular song; it captures the mind and soul, taking you to the imaginary; the smooth tempo pre-chorus is especially stunning in the way it contrasts the sonic explosion of the chorus, making it all-encompassing in a fragile, beautiful  sort of way.

The immensity of the vocals pays tribute to some of the great flag wavers of guitar anthemia, including The Verve, à la Bittersweet Symphony. Though following standard verse-chorus song structure, the melody is unique in the way it is layered; it draws you in to discover all of the moods of its guitars, and the different facets of its composition – a gift! Wrapped in a box, in a box…

I definitely feel like I’ve just been handed a surprise – their music is relaxing, mesmerizing and just what you need in your life. Making 2013 all the more promising, I can’t wait for this song to go to Glastonbury and for these guys to take over the music scene.
