What is it with Manchester, seriously!?! Not that I’m complaining… The city’s given us yet another great band that’s sure to break the scene in 2013…Plus, they have a cool band name and that’s always a bonus. Transition, Baby! Bringing to the table sounds I haven’t heard before, their music makes you feel alive. I love it more with each listen!
‘Manners Are Wasted on You’, the first tune on the EP, is definitely a sing-along anthem, with its vivacious riffs that have got allure, tenacity, and memorability; and a killer bass! The song is crafted masterfully, and flows beautifully, while avoiding the overwhelming pretentiousness of bands trying too hard to be avant garde.
And that outro…a bit Bowie-esque; it’s majestic, spacey and a little dark. It’s the perfect ending, fit for a king’s (rock’n'roll) serenade. Definitely a must hear!
‘What Are Boundaries For’ is the next track on the EP. I think people too often overlook the importance of the drummer to the song, but in my opinion, they can lift the melody or make it fall flat on its face. The intensity of this track owes itself largely to the drums, syncing your heart with its quick pace. The vocal, with a bluesiness in its very core, captures the spirit of that intensity as well, and had me feeling sad when the song ended. So I went back and played it one more time – maybe two, or six…
Now, the highlight of ‘Break Me’ is that scream! I cannot get it out of my head… completely surprising! In ten words: it’s 100% raw emotion with guitar strings in the backdrop.
‘Grit’ is the fourth and last track on the EP. Again with the crooner-rock star vocals, the melody is lighter, more playful, and moves at a quicker tempo. It’s a beautiful song to get you on the dance floor with indie pop styling, and punk/alternative layering.
Oh and that bass! Props to the bassist for bringing out such concentrated rumbling bass lines that magnify the energy x10…
Overall a great EP. Recorded at Blue Print Studios by David Woodhead , it’s packed with a melange of influences and a bit of something else you haven’t come across earlier. It deserves the justice of bringing the walls down so if your room’s not shaking, play it louder!
