I feel so lucky to have stumbled onto new talent from Portsmouth! Andy Muscat’s music is definitive and moving. There are no fluff-parts to it. It’s trim and beautiful and not without depth.
‘The Sea’ is breathtaking with an atmospheric intensity and orchestral layering. The soulfulness is very Dylan-esque and the music shares similarities with Noel Gallagher’s anthemic musical styling, especially in his more recent High Flying Birds album (‘Everybody’s on the Run’ etc.) There is a raw intelligence in the song’s development that makes it humbling and easy to listen to. The vocals are crisp and flow well through the melody and symphonic structure of the track. A few seconds in, and I was hooked, feeling like I’d come across someone who is, and should be known as, an absolute rockstar.
Listen to it below.
‘Benefit’ is further proof that Andy is a true, no-nonsense musician. With lyrics like “You tried to find excuses but you couldn’t find the time,” and “It turns out I was just a sinner. I was just a fool,” you can’t help but appreciate his ability to sum everything up so poignantly, like any genuine artist would.
Personally, these words strike a chord with me and they amplify the musical high that I get from just the melody alone. His voice is captivating and piercingly strong once again, filling up my room with a life and soul of its own.
And…
He sounds just as great live.
